Landmarks of the golden city of Jaisalmer

 Popularly known as the golden city of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer is best known for its sand dunes.   Although most people are confined to the sand dunes, there is a lot to do in and around Jaisalmer. So I made a list of all the activities and places to explore here.   1. Jaisalmer Fort   The great yellow stone fort built by the Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal is located in the center of the city. In the past, this desert city was limited only to the edge of the fort. Today the city limits have expanded due to the increase in population. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site and possibly the only "living fortress" in the world. The descendants of the royal family and other caste communities that help the ruler still live here.   2.   Jaisalmer Fort, a monument of architectural delight, is one of India's best known forts in the heart of the city of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. It is the second oldest fort in Rajasthan, built in 1156 by the Bhati Rajput ruler, Rawal Jaisal. This magnificent fortress is made of yellow sandstone which spreads in golden hues during the day and gives it the title of Golden Fortress or Sonar Quila.   This fort stands 80 meters high on Trikuta Hill and is famous for its fortification walls up to 30 feet high. It has 99 bastions which have been used as weapon platforms. The fort is a treasure trove of history that offers a lot of insight into the life of the great Rajputana dynasties who ruled this fort for centuries.  Introduction Camel safaris are just one more reason to visit Jaisalmer, but the attraction remains the royal havelis residences of the royal families of Jaisalmer.
