Jaisalmer Fort - The structural puzzle

 Jaisalmer Fort, a monument of architectural delight, is one of India's best known forts in the heart of the city of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. It is the second oldest fort in Rajasthan, built in 1156 by the Bhati Rajput ruler, Rawal Jaisal. This magnificent fortress is made of yellow sandstone which spreads in golden hues during the day and gives it the title of Golden Fortress or Sonar Quila.

 


This fort stands 80 meters high on Trikuta Hill and is famous for its fortification walls up to 30 feet high. It has 99 bastions which have been used as weapon platforms. The fort is a treasure trove of history that offers a lot of insight into the life of the great Rajputana dynasties who ruled this fort for centuries. The Jaisalmer Fort is a five storey building in the typical Rajasthani style. Based on the architectural model, this fortress is divided into three layers of walls. The outer layer is made up of huge stone blocks and the second layer is in the center surrounding the fortress. The inner wall is the third layer used by Rajput warriors to throw boiling water, oil and stone blocks at enemies.

 

You can access Rajasthan can Jaisalmer Fort through four entrances: Aksya Pole, Ganesha Pole, Suraj Pol and Hawa Pole. Inside the fort, tourists can see various Raj Mahal (royal palace), Jain temples, Laxminath temples and various trading villas (havelis) known for their exquisite design, decoration and construction. The temples of the fort are basically Jain temples dedicated to the Tirthankaras Rishabhdevji, Sambhavanathji and Ashthapadi Jain. The architectural model of these temples is similar to the Dilwara temple on Mount Abu. The statue of Lord Mahavira dominates all these temples.

 

Sarvottam Vilas, Akhai Vilas, Gaj Mahal, Rang Mahal and Moti Mahalare are five splendid palaces of the Jaisalmer fort, known for their elegant design, decorations and typologies. Of the five palaces, the Rang Mahal is the most famous and attractive. This palace is known for its murals, stained glass works, artistic interior decorations and beautiful exterior constructions.

 

The walls and ceilings are also decorated with intricate carvings. It is one of the most fascinating attractions of this fortress which attracts a large number of tourists during their visit to this fortress. This fort is one of Jaisalmer's most sought-after attractions, aside from the architecture merchant's mansion and desert landscapes.
